Supplemental Medicare Insurance vs. a Medicare Advantage Policy

With the approach of Medicare on the horizon, people who are reaching the age of 65 have a lot of confusing information laid out before them. They know that there are many advantages to Medicare, but they also know that Medicare doesn't pay for everything, and it is important to know what the choices are.

A Supplemental Medicare policy is a policy that one pays extra for, which covers many of the costs that Medicare doesn't pay. Original Medicare Part B is almost automatic when you reach the age of 65, if you have Social Security Benefits and have paid Medicare taxes while employed. Although Medicare B is not mandatory, it is almost universally utilized, and the process for declining it is such that it is almost impossible to "inadvertently" refuse Medicare B without being aware that you are doing so.

Original Medicare B in 2014 usually costs about $105 a month, and it comes out of your Social Security check. Although there are exceptions, it roughly covers 80% of medical costs.doctor holding chalkboard with medicare written on it
You may also enroll in a Prescription Drug plan (Part D) which will be an additional cost.

Hospitalization (Part A) is included in your Social Security benefits, and is available without the Medicare B premium payments. (There will still be costs to the patient, however.)

A supplemental Medicare policy will cost additional dollars, (over and above the $105) and will cover most, if not all, of the bills that  Original Medicare A and B  don't cover for hospitals and doctors, depending on the coverage that is chosen.

A Medicare Advantage policy, however, seems almost too good to be true. It will replace original Medicare, and has a low additional cost. The Medicare Advantage Policies (Part C) is sold by private insurance companies and independent agents, and mostly paid for by government funding for Medicare. These plans often include prescription Drug plans. (Part D). If a person has a Medicare Advantage policy, they may not have a Medicare supplemental policy, and no one may solicit that person to buy a supplemental policy. However, it is important to learn the differences regarding deductibles and copays before making a decision.

Making timely, informed decisions about Medicare coverage during an initial enrollment period can mean considerable savings. Make sure that people you care about feel comfortable asking the right questions about how a supplemental policy can be the right choice for them.
